How Stackable campaigns work

Every Stackable promotion is one simple rule: a threshold, a reward, and the products it covers. Learn the model once and every campaign type makes sense.

Stackable turns every classic promotion into one simple rule. Once you see the shape of that rule, every campaign type in the app is just a different setting on the same idea. This page walks through the whole model in six steps.

Every campaign is one simple rule

A campaign has three parts: when the cart reaches a threshold, what reward the shopper gets, and which items it covers.

A Stackable campaign is a single rule with three parts. The threshold is what the shopper must do (buy a quantity or reach a spend). The reward is what they get. The targeting is which products count and get rewarded. Everything else, the schedule, the stacking rules, and how it looks on your storefront, is a dial on top of that rule.

Six campaign types

Volume, Buy X Get Y, Cart Goal, Free Shipping, Free Gift, and Bundle shown as example cards.

Volume rewards buying more of the products you choose. Buy X Get Y rewards specific items, the classic free or half-price item deal. Cart Goal rewards the whole order once spending crosses a goal. Free Shipping removes or reduces shipping over a spend threshold. Free Gift adds a product at no charge once the cart reaches a spend goal. Bundle prices a set of products together, either a fixed set or a mix-and-match "any few for one price".

Each type is also a Shopify discount class, product, order, or shipping, which matters when you combine deals. You pick the type first because it decides which rewards, thresholds, and settings the builder shows you.

  • Volume, Buy X Get Y, Free Gift, and Bundle are product discounts.
  • Cart Goal is an order discount, taken off the order subtotal.
  • Free Shipping is a shipping discount.

Pick a reward

Reward options: percentage off, amount off each, fixed price, free or discounted item, and free or cheaper shipping.

Rewards come in a few flavours, and the ones you can pick depend on the campaign type. Volume campaigns can use a percentage, an amount off each item, or a fixed price per item. Cart Goal uses a percentage or amount off the order. Buy X Get Y makes the chosen items free or a percentage off. Free Shipping is a percentage off shipping (100 for fully free, less for partial). Free Gift discounts the chosen product 100 percent. Bundle sets one price for the whole set, or a percentage off the set.

What counts as "buying 3"?

Counting options: same variant, same product, across the group, or whole cart.

Counting decides what a quantity threshold means. Same variant is the strictest (three of the exact same size and colour). Same product allows any variants of one product. Across the group counts any mix of eligible items. Whole cart counts everything in the cart while still rewarding only eligible items. Spend-based campaigns skip counting entirely.

Note

Counting only appears on the two quantity-based types, Volume and Buy X Get Y. Cart Goal, Free Shipping, and Free Gift are measured by spend, so there is nothing to count.

Stacking: running deals together

Three lanes, product, order, and shipping, with a rule that two deals combine only when both allow each other.

Every campaign lives in one lane: product, order, or shipping. Each campaign has three combine switches, one per lane. Two campaigns run together on the same order only when each one allows the other’s lane. Product discounts apply first, order discounts compute on the discounted subtotal, and shipping is independent. Stackable shows you the resulting order of operations in plain English before you publish.

The possibilities

Six recipe chips: buy 3 save 10 percent, 2nd item half price, buy 2 get 1 free, free gift over 50 dollars, 15 dollars off over 100, free shipping over 75.

Every classic promotion is one of these rules, and they stack. Bulk pricing for wholesale, a gift with purchase for launches, tier ladders to lift average order value, shipping thresholds to reduce cart abandonment. Start from a template, watch the live example update as you type, and test it in the simulator before shoppers see it.
