Store code limit and cleanup

A Shopify store can hold up to 20 million discount codes in total, shared by every app. The Codes page shows how much of that you have used and offers a safe cleanup tool to reclaim room.

Shopify puts a ceiling on how many discount codes a single store can hold: 20 million in total. That ceiling is a platform limit, shared by every app that creates codes and by Shopify’s own discounts, not a per-app or per-campaign number. For most stores it never comes up, but if you run very large drops or have several apps minting codes, it is worth watching.

The store code capacity meter

The Codes page shows a Store code capacity meter: how many codes exist across your whole store against the 20 million limit. It changes as you get closer to the ceiling, so you are never surprised by a hard stop.

AtWhat happens
Under 80%Normal. Nothing to do.
80% or moreA warning appears, suggesting you clean up unused codes from ended campaigns before new codes start to fail.
95% or moreCritical. New code creation and Klaviyo top-ups pause until you free space, so you never hit the absolute limit mid-campaign.
What the meter tells you
Note

The pause at 95 percent is a safety margin, not the ceiling itself. It stops new codes before you run out entirely, which is exactly when a big send would otherwise fail. Freeing space lifts the pause.

Clean up unused codes

To reclaim room, the "Clean up unused codes" tool removes codes you are no longer using. It is deliberately conservative about what it will touch.

  • It only ever includes codes from ended or archived campaigns. Codes on a live campaign are never touched.
  • It only includes codes that have never been redeemed. Any code a shopper has used is kept, so your redemption history stays intact.

Choose "Review codes to clean up" and the app shows you exactly how many codes across how many ended campaigns would be removed. Nothing is deleted until you confirm with "Delete unused codes". The removal then runs in the background and finishes on the next sync, freeing that space back under the 20 million limit.

Tip

The simplest way to stay clear of the ceiling

Generate the batches you will actually send, rather than millions of codes you keep in reserve. Unused codes from a finished drop are exactly what the cleanup tool is for, so clearing them after a campaign ends keeps your capacity healthy.
